West Kingsdown village War Memorial

 

The West Kingsdown Branch of the Royal British Legion will remember each soldier on the 100th anniversary of his death by holding a ceremony

at 1100hrs on the day.†

A short presentation will be made about the soldier

followed by a prayer, wreath laying, the Exhortation and a minutes silence.†

All are welcome to attend this event and it is possible that

descendants of some of the men may be present.†

If anyone is related to or knows the whereabouts of the relatives

of any of these soldiers will they please contact

about two weeks before the anniversary date.

Pte. William Henry Payne, 1st B. Royal West Kent Regiment. Age 26.

who was killed in action at HILL 60 near Ypres, Belgium on 18 April 1915.

Pte. Richard Arthur Wilson, 8th Royal West Kent Regt. Age 20.

who was killed in action in the Battle of Loos on 25 September 1915.

Gnr. Robert Seal, 115th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. Age 20.

who died of wounds received in action on Christmas Day - 25 December 1915.

Pte. John Pearson, 7th Royal West Kent Regt. Age 25.

who died of wounds received on the Somme battlefield on 3 July 1916.

Lt. George Palfreyman, 7 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps [3rd Bn The Buffs] Age 23.

who went missing in action on 26 October 1916.

Bdr. John Stigger DCM MM, B Bty, 106th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Age 22.

who was killed in action on 24 December 1916 [Christmas Eve].

2nd Lt Frederick Leslie Warland. C Coy, 3rd Bn attached 12th Bn, East Surrey Regt. Age 22.

Missing presumed killed in action 25 March 1918, near Mory north of Bapaume.

2nd Lt Henry Spencer Ewen MC. 1st/23Bn Bn London Regt. Age 29.

Killed in action 5 April 1918 near the edge of Aveluy Wood, north of Albert.

Pte Frederick William Hopes. 42nd Bn Australian Army. Age 33.

Killed in action 6 Sept 1918 at Buire Wood near Tincourt.

Cpl David Elias Tidy. G Corps Sig Coy, Royal Engineers. Age 21.

Died 25 Oct† 1918. Age 21. Cause of death was influenza.

Cpl Henry James Morgan. D Battery (H), 92nd Bde RFA. Age 24.

Died 14 Nov 1918 at a base hospital a consequence of Mustard gas poisoning from

bombardment on billets in vicinity of Albert on 4 September.

Died in UK 21 Feb 1919 as a consequence of a gas attack near the river Escaillon.
